BROADWAY POP-UP SPACE
'ORBIT' Kate Beckingham, Jordan Beenken, Lucas Davidson, Hayley Megan French, Carla Liesch, Oliver Mai and Luke Strevens
Running an artist run space is hard work but it is also good work. The current MOP committee and volunteers work together within the space, discussing, not only the daily running of the gallery, but also their individual practices. Supporting each other and providing extensive critical feedback has allowed the artists to not only grow as individual practitioners but also as a group. Furthermore, the interaction and efforts of running a space allows for growth professionally and creatively.
Orbit brings together the work of Kate Beckingham, Jordan Beenken, Lucas Davidson, Hayley Megan French, Carla Liesch, Oliver Mai and Luke Strevens. While each practice is different, this group of artists have seen each other’s work shift and evolve over time, allowing for an ongoing conversation. Currently, the artists’ gravitational point is MOP Projects in Chippendale. By altering their trajectory and entering another space, the artists are able re-evaluate their practice in relation to each other. Their work, then, begins to function beyond itself, in its relationship to the other works and artists in the exhibition. Furthermore, there are different modes of orbit that surround the committee and volunteers, with those who have worked at the gallery longer taking in and learning from the newer members, as our paths begin to encircle each other.
We propose to collectively assemble the exhibition. While we acknowledge that our practices explore different theoretical models and mediums, it will be the conversations and the act of installing that will provide the centre of our elliptical paths.
