Interiors/Exteriors brings together a group of artists whose work enriches our experience of the everyday living in a place. As Australian writer David Malouf has written of the potential of art: these works increase our awareness of what exists around us, engaging our senses, ‘but also of taking all that into our consciousness and of giving it a second life there so that we possess the world we inhabit imaginatively as well as in fact.’
The amalgamation of these artists’ work—the imagined and constructed social, historical and political interiors and exteriors presents a strong sense of both being within, and a disconnect to home and place. The exhibition does not present a dichotomy of inside and outside, but rather it shows a selection of artists who have refused to choose between ‘this or that’, and instead have explored the deep and often conflicted sense of being in this place.
