Parallax Plaza Marilyn Schneider
For Parallax Plaza, Marilyn Schneider uses sculptural installation to reflect upon her interest in new redevelopments (such as Barangaroo) as Urban Entertainment Centres where decontextualised megastructures act as iconic postcard attractions that assist in the corporate rebranding of the city.
Using synthetic and industrial materials, the installation will re-model this generic “model” by focusing on three parts: the proposed casino, the promenade and the commercial buildings.
By extracting different aesthetic elements from TAB, yachts and global style architecture the installation will aim to investigate what the spectacularization of the urban landscape reveals about our culture.
This reconstruction of experience will attempt to offer an alternate ‘Architainment’ that critiques the manipulative quality of the surroundings that we find ourselves in.
Marilyn Schneider is a Sydney based artist who is currently completing her Masters of Fine Art at UNSW COFA. She has been awarded several studio residencies at Parramatta Artist Studios, Fraser Studios and Firstdraft Depot. Schneider has been included in group exhibitions at Firstdraft, Alaska Projects and Artspace. She recently completed a studio residency at Red Gate in Beijing and had a solo show at 55 Sydenham Road.
